Private Stuart Boothe Pilling

Brother of Jane Allen’s Mother in Law
Stuart was born in Stretford in 1894. His parents were Thomas and Ellen Pilling and he had a younger sister Kathleen May. He was the brother of parishioner Jane Allen’s Mother in Law. Stuart was a pupil at Manchester Grammar School from 1906 to 1911 where he excelled in modern languages.
Stuart enlisted as a Private in the 6th Battalion, Manchester Regiment in August 1914. The 6th Battalion was part of The Manchester Brigade, and on 10th September 1914 the Brigade set sail for Egypt arriving in Alexandria on 25th September. The Battalion remained in Alexandria to garrison key military installations until May 1915 when it was transferred to the Balkans arriving in Gallipoli on 6th May.
Stuart was killed in action on the 4th June 1915 in all probability during an engagement at the village of Krithia (later known as the Third Battle of Krithia) attempting to break out of the Helles bridgehead. He has no known grave and he is remembered on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsular, Turkey.
