Private John William Batty
21st Battalion Manchester Regiment
Uncle of parishioner Mrs Alice Spencer, John was born in Ardwick, Manchester on 20th January 1898. The 1911 census records him living with his parents and three sisters in Armitage Street, Ardwick.
We do not know what John did after leaving school but we do know he enlisted in the 21th Battalion in May 1915 aged 17years and four months. He obviously gave a false date of birth as the minimum age at enlistment was 18.
He arrived in France in November 1915 and was involved in the battles at Loos, Albert, Vermelles and Vimy Ridge.
John was killed in action on 23rd July 1916 on the Somme. His body was never recovered and he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.
